It is heartening to know that Pran Sikand, better known as Pran, has been chosen for this year’s Dada Saheb Phalke Award, the highest official recognition for film personalities in the country. Pran began his career as a hero in 1940 with Yamala Jat, but it was his string of negative roles in classics like Milan, Madhumati and Kashmir Ki Kali that made him a household name. He became such a believable villain that at the height of his career, people stopped naming their children ‘Pran’, petrified at the very thought of their kids growing up to become little devils! He later experimented with character roles in films like Zanjeer, Upkar and Parichay, proving his versatility as an actor. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and won four Filmfare Awards. Like all his fans, I strongly feel that he is truly deserving of this crowning glory and wish the ailing actor speedy recovery.
