A young man reinvents himself in a new sport in his adopted land.

The plot: The story is summed up by its international title, Breakaway. Rajveer Singh (Vinay Virmani) dreams of scoring a match-winning goal, followed by a moment of bliss as beautiful girls surround him. He has the talent but his ethnic origin has him struggling to succeed in a white man's sport. Thwarted by prejudice and other obstacles, he creates an all-Sikh hockey team. These young men begin their journey of ethnic conformity and social acceptance. But he also has a battle on the home front as there’s the typical Indian father (Anupam Kher) who wants his son to quit an ‘alien’ game like ice hockey and devote his life to his religion and the family business. Raised as a traditional Sikh, Rajveer was forbidden as a boy to cut his hair but in his early teens he had rebelled and shed his turban which heightens the tension between him and his devout dad.

The good: Real-life hockey player Vinay Virmani makes his debut in the lead role and demonstrates a natural talent for the game.

The bad: The cross-cultural background of the story reminds you of earlier, similar films like Bend It Like Beckham, Patiala House and Slumdog Millionaire. The film doesn’t always maintain its tempo. There’s an underside to Rajveer which isn’t depicted well.

Overall: It’s a tad better than Mausam, the other release this release. But that’s not really a compliment.
