The over-the-top, over-stressed moms who caused quite a distress the last time they came around, are back with a double dose that fails to impress.

Aspiring super moms Amy, Kiki and Carla find Christmas exhausting business. They shop for perfect gifts, clean the house, cook for an army, organise treats and decorate trees. It’s never good enough especially when, well, here’s the nightmare, their moms come visiting. So it’s three stressed-out moms plus their overbearing mothers. Moms are an assortment. Some eternally criticise, some come too close for comfort and some come close only for the money.

Jon Lucas and Scott Moore come up with exaggerated versions of all three. I mean, Kiki’s mother wears shirts with her daughter’s photo all over and even sits in the bedroom watching her daughter make out with her husband. And Amy’s snobbish mother Ruth throws a huge, lavish party in her daughter’s house without her permission. And you’re supposed to find it all overwhelmingly funny.

In this all-women fest, the men are all props. While moms like Amy and Kiki go crazy striving for perfection, the men around don’t lift a finger. Even Peter Gallagher cast as Amy’s father is like the furniture that her mother pushes around.

The graph is as familiar as Jingle Bells. There’ll be a showdown, the interfering older moms will be shown the door, there’ll be a reconciliation and a huge Christmas feast which the women will cook and serve of course.

Mila Kunis as Amy, Kristen Bell as Kiki and Kathryn Hahn as Carla are cast well and the problem isn’t with the story. But if one could ask Santa for a wish, one would ask him to please deliver some humour in the Christmas stocking. A kid using the eff word, rhyming ‘wits’ with ‘tits’ or Carla addressing her mother only as ‘bitch’ masquerade as comic dialogue. Topped with waxing vaginas and men’s balls, Christmas just lost its spirit of family fun. Sorry folks, the Bad Moms franchise plummets.

For a Christmas season film that’s more a mess than merry, A Bad Moms Christmas gets a 2* rating.
